DVB-CI Plus 1.4 Demo, IPTV without a set-top box, presented at IBC
Is the set top box about to disappear from the living room?
The capabilities of the Connected TV have dramatically increased in the last few years, providing IPTV operators with the promise of connecting the TV set directly to their IPTV platform. This saves significant cost for operators and it greatly improves the user experience. But moving from a custom set-top box to an off-the-shelf TV set presents a fresh set of challenges.
This seminar will look at all options and challenges of delivering IPTV directly to a TV set, and examine the maturity of a standards-based solution.
source:
http://www.dvb.org/events/iptv-seminar
Benefits
The system as demonstrated provides many benefits to the end-user as well as the IPTV operator:
Consumers who purchase thin wall-mounted TV sets no longer need to find a spot for a set-top box and juggle with cables. They will operate all their services on the TV with a single remote control, for an attractive experience that can integrate linear and on-demand services from broadcast and IPTV networks. The solution will also help consumers save on their electricity bill – a CAM switches off with the TV set and consumes less than 2.5 Watts while in operation, much less than a typical set-top box.
IPTV Service Providers can save on equipment handling and cost, and they can do so using a standards-based solution, which is very important to them. Providers can also offer their customers an attractive interface right on the TV set, as the solution employs a modern HTML-based browser environment that is built into most new TV sets. At the same time, providers can keep using their own Conditional Access system, as well as any other non-standards technology they employ; such technologies can be built into the CAM. Advanced features such as QoS monitoring or a proprietary fast channel change solution can also be implemented into the CAM. The solution can also reduce helpdesk calls to the provider, since installation is simple and there is no cable connection confusion for their customers.
Operator partners and DVB members involved in developing this solution:
•British Telecom
•KPN
•Swisscom
•TDC (fasttv.dk ?)
•Telekom Austria A1

CI Plus V1.4 Market Update
Following the ratification of the DVB-CI Plus specification in September, a roadmap for CI Plus V1.4 was outlined during the IPTV Seminar held earlier this month in Amsterdam.
CI Plus V1.4 enables IPTV to be delivered directly to the television, without the need of a set-top box and adds a number of features to support this capability. These new features include: the ability to route high-bandwidth IP streams through the Conditional Access Module (CAM) with the facility for the CAM to control those IP streams; a new Online Service Descriptor Table (OSDT); and support for IP Multicast. In addition CI Plus v1.4 provides cost-effective support for multi-stream operation within a single Module, thus enabling the handling of two or more encrypted services on different Transport Streams on a multi-tuner PVR Host which is relevant for e.g. PVR and Picture in Picture. In previous versions this could only be accomplished through the use of additional Host CI Plus interfaces and Modules.
SmarDTV's Erik Gazzoni indicated in a presentation that the next steps for CI Plus V1.4 will be to define different operator use-cases and integration with TVs during the next few months. The first trials are planned to take place with operators in the second half of 2014 and early 2015. The mass market launch is anticipated for the second half of 2015. He went on to say that the advantages of CI Plus V1.4 are clear as there is no set-top box, no wires, a single remote control, reduced energy consumption and a low capex for the operator.
It could be stated that CI Plus V1.4 is a direct response to the EU's Universal Service Directive handed down on 7 March 2002 concerning the universal service and users' rights relating to electronic communications networks and services. The Directive stipulated that any digital television set with an integral screen greater than 30cm that is put on the market for sale or rent in the European Community was to be fitted with at least one open interface socket. This should be either standardized by, or conforming to a standard adopted by, a recognized European standards organization, or conforming to an industry-wide specification, e.g., the DVB common interface connector, permitting simple connection of peripherals, and able to pass all the elements of a digital television signal, including information relating to interactive and conditionally accessed services.

CI+ 2.0 State Of Affairs - Alexander Adolph Reports
Rumor has it that DVB is working on a "version 2.0" of CI+, and many are speculating what it might entail. This seems to imply two things: firstly, that DVB-CI is alive and kicking, and secondly that people have interest in (and see room for) taking it further. We can - and are happy to - confirm that DVB is indeed working on CI+ 2.0.
Apart from a couple of functional enhancements and new features around content management, the main punch line of the new standard is a "USB form factor". This will bring several advantages. It will remove the need for a single purpose PCMCIA slot in the TV set or set-top box, and thereby reduce host implementation costs. It will also remove constraints in the design of CI+ modules. The flat shape and thermal power dissipation limitations of PCMCIA modules (when inserted fully into the host) presented a number of challenges to manufacturers. These challenges are reduced by a USB device always remaining outside the host's casing, and thereby allowing for a more compact design and much smaller PCB sizes. And last but not least, the higher data rates of USB pave the way for UHD use cases, which are not possible with the old interface.
Work on CI+ 2.0 started in April 2014, and we expect to hand the specification over to ETSI during the first half of next year. It will be a two-part document. Part 1 will deal with everything USB, whereas Part 2 will define further extensions to CI+. That second part is independent of the underlying physical layer, and could for instance also be implemented on PCMCIA.
-----------------------

NEOTION is one of the six founders of CI Plus LLP. CI Plus standard is a technical specification that adds security and features to the proven DVB-CI Common Interface standard.
CI Plus functionalities have become a true requirement to promote CAM over traditional Pay TV markets.
The latest version CI Plus V1.4 promises the support of IPTV services, and provides another way to include CA/DRM- protected content in “over-the-top” and hybrid broadcast-broadband content offerings.
The new television sets and module supporting the specification V1.4 should be available on the market from mid of 2017.
